Race Splits
Below are my 5K splits for the Boston Marathon. You will see right about where my hamstrings started misbehaving.
5K - 24:40 (7:58 pace)
10K - 24:17 (7:50 pace)
15K - 25:19 (8:10 pace)
20K - 26:02 (8:25 pace)
25K - 25:08 (8:07 pace)
30K - 25:49 (8:20 pace)
35K - 28:26 (9:10 pace)
40K - 31:38 (10:12 pace)
Final .45K - 14:32 (10:21 pace)
Total Pace: 8:39
Looking at my splits helps me to re-trace my footsteps and keep the race fresh in my memory. You can see that in the 30-35K range (18.6 to 21.7 miles) I started slowing down due to the hills. Then from 35K to the finish my pace really took a beating due to the cramps in my hamstrings. I stopped at the medical tents three times to get sprayed and also stopped several times to stretch, which also contributed to my slower pace during that final portion of the race.

Congratulations on your race! The early rolling hills had an impact for me. I was surprised. Great job hanging in there and finishing strong. What did they spray you with at the medical tents? Maybe I should’ve visited them?

I’m not sure what the stuff was, but it is supposed to “cool off” your muscles and stop cramping. It worked for about 1/2 mile, then the cramping would start again. First time I’ve ever had cramping during a run.
